funny chat…05-14-2007

this is copied over from a hilarious chat i just had with my good friend, carl spackler…i’m the Dude (of course, the names have been changed to protect the innocent)….i loved this story…so i felt it only right that i share it. enjoy.

Carl Spackler says:
saturday…we get down there around 4, the childrens are playin outside, and the adults are settin up on the porch…actually i am inside settin in the living room, but it was a nice day so they had the front door opened.

Carl Spackler says:
the childrens are playin, when all of a sudden one of the fathers starts yellin at them to stop. it seems that 3 of them were fighting. well, *lil kid*, who has the worst temper of any kid i have ever been around, takes ill to *grownup #1* yelling at him. *grownup #1* is not *lil kid*s father. *lil kid* is 8.

Carl Spackler says:
*lil kid* starts cussin *grownup #1*, and i quote…”shut the fuck up got damnit, your not my fuckin dad, and you don’t fuckin tell me what to do. you can go to fuckin hell.”

the Dude says:
lmao

Carl Spackler says:
at which point all the other parents start tellin *lil kid* to calm down…he then says, and i quote…”fuck all you guys, you bunch of fuckers, fuck you, got damn fuckin bitches, go to hell, you are a bunch of fuckers”

Carl Spackler says:
picture an 8 year old screamin to the top of his lungs, face red, slobberin and cryin

Carl Spackler says:
if he was my child i would not rest easy

Carl Spackler says:
he might have issues

Carl Spackler says:
so a few hours later we are playin cards, and he wants to play…it really pisses me off when the dads let their kids play, anyway *daddy* lets *lil kid* sit down and start playin…and with luck he wins like 2 hands in a row. so i am like i am not lettin this little fucker take anymore of my money and i am gonna teach these dads a lesson.

the disconnect.

i really don’t want to sound old.

i hate the thought of getting old.

one of my wishes, if granted 3, would be to be for immortality. i would want to live forever. now i’d have some conditions…when i’m 900 years old, i don’t want to have the body and mind of a 900 year old man…just sort of freeze my age where it is now and let it rip. a lot more people than i would have ever expected would NOT choose immortality if given an option, for various reasons. one of my main reasons for wanting to hang around for the rest of time is that i want to see the world change…see PEOPLE change…i want to know how it all works out. i want to see if we finally get our shit together or if we just fuck it all up.

thing is, if i just take a look at how things have changed just during my lifetime, the thoughts of seeing a FOREVER of change seems a little depressing.

so, at the risk of sounding old, i just have to say that it makes me sad to see how much things have changed over the years and to realize how much more they are going to change. change can be good. just ask anyone around here who has made the switch from a dial-up connection to DSL about the change…take a peek at the Discovery Channel in High Definition…eat a piece of slightly undercooked pork without worrying about getting a hookworm…change, in many cases, is definitely good.

rock and F’ing roll…

if this song, and this video, doesn’t kick your ass, you may need to check your pulse!

i’ve made it my personal mission to bring as many fans as i possibly can into the Kings of Leon camp. folks, there are only a handful of bands left out there today that are making really KICK ASS rock and roll music, and this is most certainly one of them. my discovery of the Kings of Leon came about when i went searching for the name of the song used in that funky Volkswagen commercial where the guy and the girl go out and buy a stereo and then come home and BLAST it in their little house, while jumping up and down like crazy people.

that song turned out to be “Molly’s Chamber”, and the band, the Kings of Leon. i have been addicted from that moment on. so far, i’ve tried passing it around to a few friends, but it hasn’t met with the response i was hoping for. i think it just may take a few listens before it settles into your brain and kicks your ass, too…

so just ease back, click on that video below, and soak it all in.

political correctness SUCKS!

ok…how’s THAT for being P.C.? you know, things in this country are in a sad state of affairs right now. in an attempt to make us all better citizens and protect us from ourselves, our society has become a lot less interesting than it used to be. cartoons used to be so great. sure, they were filled with stereotypes and animated violence, but they were also truly funny, even for adults. they were an homage to cinema and literary history in many ways. now, i don’t even know what the hell is going on. you’ve got a sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea and pals around with a starfish, a little bilingual explorer chick, and any other number of weird ass creations.

in an attempt to not expose children to anything that might cause them any emotional trauma, i think we’re going to end up either producing a nation full of really boring kids or really, really strange ones. the funny thing is that the movement to reduce violence in cartoons was based on the belief that the cartoon violence would lead to real-life violence. as the cartoons have gotten more watered down, however, the behavior of children definitely has not. it seems like it has become commonplace to hear about violence in schools now. guess it is time to find something else to blame. (does that mean we can get all those great Looney Toons cartoons back on the air?!??)

and heaven forbid we show anything sexual on television. violence? no problem…but just let a boob slip out at the super bowl and all hell breaks loose. folks…come on…what is it exactly we are trying to protect everybody from? janet jackson’s breast was exposed on tv for like a split second, but the tv and radio industry have been hounded and watched over by the FCC ever since. everyone is so afraid of saying the “wrong thing” and incurring a huge fine from the FCC that they are afraid to say anything. i sort of thought all the racket would die down and things would get back to normal, but unfortunately, that has not been the case.

just a bad advertisement…

as i watch tv, and i do watch my fair share of it, i will often notice when a commercial stands out as being either really good or really bad.  i have to say, there have been some very funny commercials over the past couple of years, but there are some where i find myself scratching my head and wondering who in the hell actually approved THAT ad?

over the past few days, i’ve been sick, so i’ve been covered up on the couch and watching more tv than usual.  that meant seeing more commercials, and one in particular has just driven me NUTS.

ford motor company’s commercials for their new “Edge” vehicle are not so bad, as a commercial goes.  i mean, you get to see plenty of shots of the vehicle riding around, so what more can you ask for in a car commercial?  but the SONG for this damn thing is just HORRIBLE.  the commercials end with the singer announcing, “i like to live on the ed-JA!”.  think of those sunday morning preaching shows on the radio and tv, where the preacher makes it a point to over accentuate the last syllable of certain words…you know, “people get ready-AH!  the new ford ed-JA is coming to take you away-AH!”  it is AWFUL.  in my opinion, ford motor company has been out of touch with american car buyers for a LONG time now.  their designs seem “old” to me.  the newly designed ford mustang is a very sharp car, but that’s the first “hit” in a long line of misses for ford, if you ask me.

they’ve been desperately trying to change their image lately, it seems, but i just don’t think they are getting it right.  this ad just goes to further prove that point.  in an attempt to be young and cutting edge, they come across as old and annoying.  does that make YOU want to buy a ford?  i didn’t think so.

my first photo album…

this is mainly just a test of how this whole Gallery2 WordPress Plugin will work. i’ll be adding more photos as this moves along and i fine tune everything.  i think the best way, after playing with the plugin for a couple of minutes, is to just set up a gallery page, with my different albums showcased there.  so, without further ado…i now have a Gallery button.

so, it is a new year…a look back, and a look ahead

the new year is here. it really doesn’t seem so long ago that we rang in 2006. this year promises to be pretty eventful for me. i’ll be getting married in only a few short months. we have a lot of preparations to make, but we’re moving along pretty good. if i hold true to my resolutions, this year should also see me become more physically and mentally healthy. i haven’t smoked for a couple of years now, and i’ve really cut back on my partying days. now, i just have to get my weight situation under control, but i think i can do that.

the mental party could be the hardest. part of the process was starting this blog. by clearing out some of the clutter in my head, i’m hoping it will make room for more ideas and creativity to come through. another thing i hope will help is continuing to learn to play the guitar. i’ve been playing semi-regularly since around thanksgiving of 2006, and i can already tell a big difference in my ability. it also seems to stimulate my brain, and that is always good. i also plan to read more in this new year. i have books i’ve just never gotten to, and i want to get to them this year.

i will also be moving some projects that i’ve kept on the back burner right up to the front. it is time to see if some of these ideas can pan out. i’m so bad about coming up with an idea, carrying it through about 70% of the way, but just not pushing it on across the finish line. then, i complain about seeing other people succeed with their ideas. i guess i’m afraid that maybe my ideas won’t work out, but until i’ve actually seen one of them through all the way, how will i really know?

i also plan to bust my ass on finishing my masters thesis in geology and finishing up that degree. it will mean a small bump in pay at work, but more importantly, i won’t feel like my 3 years of graduate school were wasted. after that, i may start work on another graduate degree in computer science and information systems, but i’ll just take it one step at a time.

so what about 2006? what stands out to me in this past year? what makes my top 10 countdown of Memorable Shit from 2006? let’s see…

10. i was pretty impressed by the democrats taking back over the US senate and house. i really didn’t think there was anyway they could do it. just goes to show you how pissed off and fed up the people in this country are with george bush, i suppose. now, we’ll see what these folks can do. they wanted the power, and now they have it. i’m hopeful we’ll see some good things finally.

9. another pretty big story this past year was the death of the crocodile hunter, steve irwin. it just seemed like that nut was gonna be around forever.

8. on a personal level, i got to travel to colorado twice in 2006. i hadn’t seen the mountains since my last geology field trip in 1999, and it had been way too long. the first trip was a driving trip, and it was miserably long. the second was on a plane, and it just reminded me of how much i love and hate flying. but man, the mountains. we got to see a lot of snow while we were there, but nothing like what they’ve been pounded with over the past few weeks. i hope it isn’t seven years between seeing the mountains again. if i do, however, the next trip will probably be by driving, due in large part to #7 on the list…

7. the crash of com air flight 5191 at bluegrass field in lexington, ky. this one makes the list not just because of the tragedy of the situation, but also the fact that it happened so close by. although i didn’t know anyone personally on the plane, i had to really pause for a while that morning as the story was being reported to think about whether or not i might have. turns out, a couple of local boys were almost scheduled to be on that flight, but chose a later flight instead.

6. on a happier note, my favorite sports team of all time, the Pittsburgh Steelers, finally…FINALLY!!…won a super bowl again! i became a Steelers fan the last time they won one, way back in the ’79-80 season, against the Rams, and i’ve waited and waited to see them win another one. it was a magical run, followed up by a VERY miserable season and now they have to search for another coach to replace the irreplaceable bill cowher, but i will continue to believe.

5. in another sports related story, rich brooks was able to not only take the University of Kentucky Wildcats football team to their first bowl game in 7 years, but he also led them to their first bowl win in 22 years. they were fun to watch, even if they did make it pretty stressful at times. here’s hoping 2007 will bring continued success.

4. the whole john mark karr fiasco was pretty big news this year, too. he basically comes out and admits to killing jon benet ramsey, but then forensic evidence proves he’s lying, and that he did NOT kill her, and so he then comes back and says…nah…i didn’t do it. what a nut. but this was a year for nuts, as we’ll see in #3.

3. celebrities gone wild. first, mel gibson goes into a rage after being picked up for drunk driving. he causes a HUGE controversy with his anti-semitic remarks, as well as referring to a female police officer as “sugar tits”. oh, braveheart. then, kosmo kramer goes nuts at a comedy club and yells all sorts of racist remarks at a couple of african american patrons who were heckling him and giving him a hard time on stage. unfortunately for him, the remarks are caught on someone’s cellular phone video recorder and, of course, are widely circulated within no time flat. kramer then goes on his apology world tour, which, to me, almost makes him look more insane than the on-stage blow up. i have more opinions on this story that i may share in another post soon. now, to close out the year, you have donald trump and rosie o’donnel going at it. add to that all of the britney spears sans panties photos that were everywhere on the internet, the Pageant Girls Gone Wild activity, and any number of other crazy celebrity news stories, and it was quite a memorable year for all those in tinsel town.

2. this was a good year for music, at least in my little world. sure, the radio airwaves are still corrupted by all kinds of horrible noise, but there are some great bands out there making some very good music, and i was lucky enough to discover a few of them this year, and rediscover a few, as well. one of the new discoveries included Wolfmother, who i had heard of but had never followed up on. this band has a very vintage sound and just rocks. you should check ‘em out. the big RE-discovery for me this year was the Black Crowes. they’ve always been my favorite band, but following their reunion in 2005, i was especially excited about them this past year. i was able to see them twice this year, but one of those shows was absolutely magical. me and my bride-to-be saw them in Louisville, KY, at the Louisville Palace Theater. i bought the tickets on ebay, and we were only 3 rows back. the theater was incredible, and the atmosphere was absolutely intoxicating. they played for 3 hours, and i could have listened all night long. i’m looking forward to at least 1 new release from the band this year, as well as another tour.

1. i’m sure there are other very memorable moments from this past year, and i’ll probably think of them later…but easily the MOST memorable moment of 2006 for me…i got engaged to the most beautiful and loving woman i’ve ever known. she is my soul mate. she makes me laugh and smile just to be around her, and she inspires me on a daily basis. i could never have imagined i’d meet someone like her, and this year, we will be wed. that, alone, should make 2007 a year that i’ll remember forever.

so there we go. a look back…a look ahead. it should be an interesting year.

sick today…

i am home sick today.  my head is all stopped up, and i just feel like pure crap.  however, i do have a weapon in this battle…its name is Tylenol Nighttime Cold Medicine.  this shit just knocks you OUT!  i have taken it the past 2 nights, and it just puts me in a coma.  it also works against the symptoms, so that’s a plus, too.  so if you have a cold or anything, pick up some of this stuff and just say goodnight.  it is some good shit.
